FIBC Types C & D: Safe Packaging for Explosive or Flammable Environments

In industrial packaging, safety is non-negotiable. Antistatic big bags – known as Type C and Type D FIBCs – are specifically designed for safe use in explosive atmospheres, where electrostatic discharges could ignite flammable dusts, powders or vapours.
But what exactly sets these two types apart? And how do you know which one suits your application?
What Are Antistatic Bulk Bags?
During the filling or discharging of bulk materials, friction between the product and the bag’s surface can generate static electricity. In sensitive environments, this static can lead to sparks – a serious risk in ATEX Zones 1 and 2.
To prevent that, antistatic FIBCs are made from special fabrics that either conduct or safely dissipate static electricity.
Type C FIBCs (Conductive Bags)
Type C bulk bags are made from woven conductive fabrics, often incorporating carbon or metal threads. These threads form a grounding grid, which must be connected to a verified ground during use.
Key features:
- Must be grounded to ensure safety
- Suitable for ATEX Zones 1 & 2
- Cost-effective option
- Ideal for chemical powders, food ingredients, pigments, and pharmaceuticals
If grounding is not applied correctly, the bag offers no antistatic protection – so proper handling is essential.
Type D FIBCs (Dissipative Bags)
Type D bags are made from static-dissipative fabric that allows safe discharge of electrical charges into the atmosphere – without the need for grounding.
Key features:
- No grounding required
- Suitable for ATEX Zones 1 & 2
- Safer in mobile operations or where grounding is unreliable
- Slightly higher cost, but less human error risk
They are ideal for operations in confined or high-mobility environments, where traditional grounding is impractical.
Type C vs. Type D: Which Should You Choose?
| Feature | Type C | Type D |
| Requires grounding | Yes | No |
| Suitable for ATEX Zones | Yes | Yes |
| Safer for mobile environments | Limited | Recommended |
| Cost | Lower | Slightly higher |
| Risk of human error | Higher | Lower |
